The Crossbow

Hello Everyone,

Today I have been watching a history series called “Conquest”, and today I learnt a bit about the crossbow so I thought I might give you guys some facts about the crossbow.

The Crossbow was used by the Chinese in 6th century BC, then later by the Greeks in the 4th Century BC and finally in the form of the siege weapon called the Ballista which was used by the Romans.

After that there is no firm evidence of it until the until the 10th century AD in the middle ages.

The earliest crossbow was called an Arbalest, it was basically a bow protected by animal skin connected to a wooden stock with a simple lever as the trigger, a stirrup was later added to the crossbow to make it easier to load.

A crossbow also had a special arrow called a bolt.

The next big improvement to the crossbow is that the wooden bow is replaced by a steal frame, it also got a new loading gadget called the windlass, which was a system of pulleys attached to two handles which you wound up to cock the bow. Later the Windlass was replaces by the Cranequin which was a system of a toothed cog connected to a toothed bar which cocked the bow like the windlass, unlike the windlass the cranequin would never get tangled.

Shortly after the invention of the musket crossbows were no longer needed and were mainly just used for hunting and sport.

today the crossbow is used in sport as well as modern military for example, in the Americas, the Peruvian army equips some soldiers with crossbows and rope, to establish a zip-line in difficult terrain. In Brazil the CIGS (Jungle Warfare Training Center) also trains soldiers in the use of crossbows. It also used in America, Cambodia, Asia and Europe.

Anyway I hope you enjoyed this Blog on the crossbow.
